Florida News That Impacts You – August 1st, 2022

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Gas prices continued to fall through the weekend and we enter August with the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded at $3.92 statewide. That’s 16 cents cheaper than a week ago, and $1.05 below the June peak. In Southeast Florida, prices range from an average low of $4.03 in Miami-Dade to $4.17 in the Palm Beaches... Speaking of trends...
  • Florida’s weekly trend for daily COVID-19 cases closed out July below 10,500 daily. That’s about two hundred per day fewer than at the onset of July and a decrease of about 400 daily cases over a week ago.
  • Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. has issued notice to Florida’s school superintendents, to ignore the federal government’s recent directive changes regarding Title IX classifications – related to gender identity. The new federal guidance uses gender identity as opposed to biological sex which is at odds with Florida law.
  • A large wave of Saharan dust continues to make its way across South Florida. The dust arrived late last week leading to dry and hotter than usual conditions. Those with asthma and dust allergies are especially susceptible to conditions and are recommended to limit exposure outdoors.
