- The Palm Beach County School Board approved a proposal to implement metal detectors in all public high schools within the district. The metal detectors will be phased in after the completion of a previously approved pilot program is completed at the following high schools: John I. Leonard, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Lakes, and Seminole Ridge. The exact timing is TBD.
- Governor DeSantis signed the Immigration bill into law Wednesday which introduces a host of new policies aimed at curbing illegal immigration. As of July 1st, E-Verify will become mandatory for all employers with 25 or more employees. Additionally, employers which knowingly hire illegal immigrants will face the suspension of their business license. The law also invalidates ID’s issued to those lacking legal status from other state and local governments while also raising the penalties for human smuggling, including the transporting of illegal immigrants, to a second-degree felony.
- South Florida is the top region in the country for identity theft according to a new report by Updgraded Points. According to their finding, the Miami metro, which encompasses Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, has the highest rate of identity theft with greater than 87 victims per 10,000 residents annually – meaning 1 out of every 115 South Floridians become victims annually.
- Gas prices fell two cents yesterday. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is currently $3.51 per gallon – nine cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price remains $3.75 per gallon, which is the highest price in the state.
