Florida News That Impacts You – October 9th, 2023

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Two disturbances are active in the tropics. A tropical disturbance off the coast of Africa is being given an 80% chance of development over the next week though it appears unlikely to impact any populated areas. A second disturbance in the Gulf has been given a 10% chance of development over the next week as it drifts north towards Texas.
  • Governor DeSantis has condemned pro-Hamas rallies held in Florida following the terror attack on Israel Saturday while also pledging Florida’s support to Israel’s efforts. Two rallies billed as “Victory to Palestine” were promoted on social media and held in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa yesterday. Quoting DeSantis: The rallies in Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale supporting Hamas are abhorrent. Hamas is a terrorist group that is dedicated to the destruction of Israel and committing atrocities to further that end. Several Americans are among those killed and captured by Hamas.
  • The Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County and Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County are among local agencies providing aid through the Israel Terror Relief Fund and Israel Emergency Campaign. The aid includes support for shelter, security and trauma support.
  • Gas prices were slightly lower through the weekend. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.46 per gallon – 2 cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.66 per gallon, which is the 5th highest price in the state. Oil futures are higher following the Iranian-sponsored terror attack by Hamas on Israel.
