Florida News That Impacts You – October 30th, 2023

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Two disturbances are active in the tropics. A disturbance just east of the Bahamas has a 30% chance of development. If it were to develop it would be unlikely to become more than a tropical depression or weak tropical storm given generally unfavorable conditions for strengthening off of our coastline. Another disturbance is in the eastern Caribbean Sea and has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone as it drifts towards Central America. We’re still inside of a King Tide cycle through Wednesday which may bring localized flooding to vulnerable coastal communities.
  • The FBI’s national crime report shows violent crime in Florida dropping by 23% year-over-year and 32% over 2019’s pre-COVID levels.
  • South Florida Congressman Carlos Gimenez is voicing concern over a recent boat of illegal immigrants which made landfall in Key Largo. While boats of Cubans fleeing the legacy Castro regime from Cuba have long made the trek across the Florida Straits to the Keys, a recent boat included 17 illegal immigrants from China in addition to 3 from Ecuador. Numerous Chinese nationals have been detained for spying in South Florida over the past decade.
  • PBSO’s Operation Hot Wheels, which is an ongoing campaign to prevent street takeovers and races resulted in the arrests of four people in Greenacres Saturday night. In addition to the arrests, a total of 154 citations, 12 criminal and 91 spectator citations were issued.
  • Gas prices were slightly lower through the weekend. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.28 per gallon – 6 cents higher than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.47 per gallon, which is the 8th highest price in the state.
