Florida News That Impacts You – May 30th, 2024 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.       

  • Governor DeSantis signed nine bills into law on Wednesday. The new laws include the Surrendered Infants law which will allow parents to surrender an infant to medical professionals at a hospital after delivery or to authorities anonymously for up to 30 days after birth. The Dental Services law requires dentists provide patients their full name and contact information, including after-hours contact information for emergencies. The Flood Disclosure law requires sellers of residential property to provide a completed flood disclosure form to the purchaser prior to closing. The Florida Uniform Fiduciary Income and Principal Act strengthens protections for clients of fiduciaries while also strengthening their rights in legal matters. Specifically, a court won’t be able to order a fiduciary’s decision-making process overturned unless it’s found to be unlawful. The Verification of Eligibility for Homestead Exemption bill is now law. It extends property tax benefits to veterans and surviving spouses of homesteaded property.  
  • The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has concluded a multi-year investigation into prostitution rings identifying seven massage parlors as front operations for sex trafficking – leading to the immediate closure of four of the operations. The others still listed as active businesses are Green Massage Spa, Water Cube Massage and Palm Spa.  
  • The Town of Palm Beach has banned the use of fertilizers from June 1st through September 30th to cut down on harmful runoff water during the rainy season.  
  • It’ll be hot again today, though not quite as hot as it’s been with a high near 90 which is about 5 degrees higher than usual for this date. Temps will continue to moderate towards seasonal norms in the mid-80’s by the weekend. 
  • Gas prices were flat for the second straight day on Wednesday. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.50 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.68 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.54 and in Indian River County the average is $3.45 per gallon.
