Florida’s Voter Registration by Party – June 18th, 2024
Bottom Line: Florida’s voter registration trends haven’t been the friend of Florida’s Democrats in recent years. For the better part of twenty years Republicans steadily ate away at the voter registration advantage Florida’s Democrats had held since the onset of partisan voter record keeping in the 1970’s. By November of 2021, amid massive pandemic induced relocations, Republican voter registrations outnumbered Democrats for the first time. And every month since the GOP advantage by way of voter registration has grown. At the onset of 2023 Florida’s Democrats opted to head in a new direction with party leadership tapping former Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to lead the party going forward. It’s safe to say that hasn’t turned the tide back towards Democrats in Florida. Last year Florida’s Democrats saw an active voter registration decline of greater than 566,000 voters. In 2024 the trend of a growing Republican advantage in the state has remained the same.
The most recent update from Florida’s Division of Elections reflects voter registration information statewide through May 31st.
These are the 2024 voter registration changes entering June:
- DEM: -65,595 (-44,062 in May)
- GOP: +85,375 (-19,942 in May)
- NPA/Other: +5,575 (-31,147 in May)
The current breakout of registered voters looks like this...
- DEM: 32.1%
- GOP: 39.1%
- NPA/Other: 28.8%
The cleaning up of voter rolls in advance of the August primary elections continued in earnest in May leading to fewer registered voters regardless of voter registration status – however once again Democrats far and away experienced the biggest impact losing more than twice as many voters as Republicans during the month. What’s more is that Democrats are continuing to underperform NPA registrations as well. If the current trends hold Democrats could be at risk of sliding to the third position within the state in the not-so-distant future.
The Republican advantage over Democrats now stands at a record 930,671 voters. That total includes a net change of 24,120 to the advantage of Republicans over the previous month. Of Florida’s 67 counties – only 10 currently have Democrat majorities by way of voter registration. A county worth watching is one of the largest in the state, Hillsborough, which includes Tampa. Should the current pace of changes in voter registration keep up, it could flip before Election Day in November.
