- The Army Corps of engineers has announced they intend to begin eastern discharges from Lake Okeechobee on December 7th with the intent to lower the lake’s level from 16 feet to 11.5 feet as part of what they’re calling “Lake Recovery Operations”. The size and proportion of the discharges announced would be in violation of the Corps newest operating manual which is supposed to prioritize southern discharges into the Everglades, which is the natural flow of the water, greatly reducing eastern and western discharges in the process. The Lake’s discharges have been directly responsible for the catastrophe loss of sea grass and related life in Florida’s eastern estuaries which was responsible for the manatee starvation crisis three years ago (amid other issues).
- Today is expected to be the second busiest travel day of the year. If you’re flying the TSA recommends downloading the MyTSA app which provides real-time wait times for Palm Beach International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The TSA reports passenger traffic is up between 6%-7% over last year heading into the busiest travel time of the year. With 2.9 million people flying today. - Gas prices were flat on Tuesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.12 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.28 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.17 and in Indian River County the average is $3.14 per gallon.
