Florida News That Impacts You – February 4th, 2025

  • Governor DeSantis unveiled his proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year and agenda for the state’s legislative session which gets underway March 4th. Entitled the “Focus on Fiscal Responsibility” budget – DeSantis is calling for $3 billion less in government spending, with a reduction in state employment, with an emphasis on debt reduction and strong state reserves while maintaining Florida’s sales tax holidays from previous years. Among new proposals DeSantis is calling for an end to the state’s Business Rent Tax and an exemption of the intangible tax on mortgages for the first $500,000 financed. The governor also referred to the upcoming summer as the “Second Amendment Summer” and is supportive of an open carry law.  
  • ICE announced the results of a two-day sting operation in Palm Beach County last week. In a joint operation with Border Patrol, 32 criminal illegal aliens from ten different countries were arrested and will be deported. Common offenses based on ICE’s release, aside from unlawfully being in the country, included drug and human trafficking.  
  • Parking rates at Palm Beach International Airport have increased. According to the airport effective February 1st, parking has increased by $1 to $4 per day based upon the lots used. Rates now range from $8 to $34 per day.  
  • Mostly sunny skies and warm today with highs in the low 80’s – warmer than usual for this date. Similar weather is expected for the rest of the week.  
  • Gas prices rose sharply by 10 cents per gallon on Monday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.16 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.29 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.18 and in Indian River County the average is $3.15 per gallon.
