Florida News That Impacts You – January 7th, 2026  

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.     

  • Florida was second in the nation for net migration in 2025 according to U-Haul's annual Growth Index. Florida rose from fourth in 2024 to second last year, passing North Carolina and South Carolina, finishing just behind Texas for net gains according to the study. 2024’s top state, South Carolina, fell to fifth last year.  
  • Costco is on track to open a Costco Depot location at Sansone Legacy Park in Tradition this March. The plan first approved by Port St. Lucie officials in 2023 is expected to eventually employ up to 500 people. The first phase of the project consists of a cold and dry storage facility. The second phase will add a dry goods distribution center. 
  • A decision has yet to be made about the future of law enforcement in Loxahatchee Groves. In Tuesday’s meeting, the council tabled a vote to potentially end their contract with PBSO amid affordability concerns. The decision will be taken up again later this month. Enhanced PBSO patrols have already ended within the community. 
  • Sunny skies and warmer than usual temps today with highs near 80. 
  • Gas prices fell another two cents per gallon on Tuesday and are 31 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $2.77 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $2.95 per gallon, in Martin the average is $2.78, it’s $2.77 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $2.81 per gallon.
