- Shelia Cherfilus-McCormick has resigned from Congress. The former South Florida Congresswoman under federal indictment for the alleged unlawful use of $5 million in COVID-relief money opted to resign prior to her hearing before the House of Representatives that likely would have led to her expulsion from Congress. Her criminal trial is scheduled to take place next February.
- The federal detention and deportation facility known as Alligator Alcatraz will remain open following a decision from the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals overturning District Court Judge Kathleen Williams’ ruling to close the facility. Williams’ original opinion was previously stayed by the appeals court pending their ruling. An effort by opposition groups argued that the facility required a federal environmental impact study review.
- The Martin County Sheriff's Office has arrested four people involved with a counterfeiting operation. MSO said the suspects were attempting to use fake $100 bills to make purchases at two Publix locations. After a successful transaction at one location – the four suspects were spotted attempting to use the counterfeit currency at a second location. $8,000 in counterfeit currency was recovered during the arrest. Authorities continue to warn local businesses to be diligent amid a significant uptick in counterfeiting attempts at area businesses this year.
- We’ll have gusty conditions, especially along the coast to start the day, with highs in the upper 70’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast – cooler than usual for this date. Similar but less windy weather is expected tomorrow.
- Gas prices rose two cents per gallon Tuesday to $3.97 per gallon statewide. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.14 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.98, it’s $3.97 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.01 per gallon.
