Florida News That Impacts You – May 6th, 2026

  • The Palm Beach County Commission voted 4-3 to rename Palm Beach International Airport for President Donald Trump. The county was compelled under state law to approve the name change which is set to take place July 1st following final FAA approval. The deal agreed to by the county includes approved branding, a royalty-free license to use the president’s name and likeness for signage, advertising, marketing, merchandise, promotions and branding. 
  • Spirit’s final legal filing shows a total of 4,853 jobs were lost in Florida with the collapse of Spirit Airlines this past weekend. The bulk of those jobs, over 3,000, were lost between the company’s Dania Beach headquarters and its hub – Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport.  
  • The Town of Jupiter approved next steps to create its own fire rescue department as it’s set to decouple from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. Tuesday’s vote put into process the creation of a plan to determine costs for the establishment of the new department and how residents will be made to pay for it. The town’s council has stated they anticipate savings of $10 million annually. 
  • This week is NOAA and the National Weather Service’s annual Hurricane Preparedness week in advance of June’s start to hurricane season. Each day has a specific area of focus. Today’s focus is Get Moving When a Storm Threatens. This includes protecting your home, determining shelter options, arrangements for pets, having a go-bag ready if needed, etc. 
  • We’ll have partly cloudy skies today with highs in the 85’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast – typical for this date. The warming trend will continue throughout the week. 
  • Gas prices rose to multi-year highs on Tuesday to $4.46 per gallon statewide. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.60 per gallon, in Martin the average is $4.50, it’s $4.47 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.47 per gallon.
