Florida News That Impacts You – May 7th, 2026

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

  • By a 6-1 vote, the Palm Beach County School Board approved a 3.5% increase in teacher salaries, which had previously been recommended by a special magistrate. The vote followed an impasse hearing where the district argued that it couldn’t afford the raise after having approximately 7,000 fewer students attend the district’s public schools leading to a revenue shortfall. The raise will take effect for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. Following the raise, the average teacher salary in the district will be $71,725.
  • A potential Brightline station in Stuart appears to be off the table after years of discussion and even a one-time agreement having been reached with local officials. The Florida East Coast Railway, which holds operational oversight of the railway system, sent a letter to Stuart officials stating it will not approve a Brightline station in the city due to operational issues that would arise from a station. Additionally, Brightline recently warned it may not have the financial ability to “continue as a going concern”, amid continued operational losses.
  • This week is NOAA and the National Weather Service’s annual Hurricane Preparedness week in advance of June’s start to hurricane season. Each day has a specific area of focus. Today’s focus is Stay Protected During Storms. This includes staying in safe places during the threat of rising water and high winds, having a way to get weather alerts and forecast updates, understanding inland impacts, and listening to local updates while avoiding traveling unless ordered to evacuate.
  • It’ll be sunny and hot today with highs in the low 90’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast – much warmer than usual for this date. We’ll have similar weather for the rest of the week.
  • Gas prices reached fresh multi-year highs on Wednesday, rising six cents per gallon to $4.52 per gallon statewide – though prices locally were flat. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.60 per gallon, in Martin the average is $4.50, it’s $4.47 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.47 per gallon.
