- While in West Palm Beach on Tuesday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a lawsuit against ChatGPT parent company OpenAI and its founder and CEO Sam Altman. The first-of-its kind lawsuit alleges deceptive practices in marketing its AI products potentially placing children at risk. This includes providing information that can encourage violence and self-harm, while also illegally collecting the data of minors.
- Florida’s 1st District Court of Appeals rejected to hear the appeal to Florida’s recently redistricted congressional map. Last week a Leon County judge ruled in the state’s favor allowing for the implementation of the new map for this year’s midterm election cycle.
- The Florida legislature is in Tallahassee for a special session to consider Governor DeSantis’s proposed amendment to provide property tax relief, with the potential for eventual homesteaded property tax elimination. The governor’s proposal seeks to initially raise the homestead exception to $250,000 over the next two years with the legislature having the ability to establish a plan for elimination. The proposal requires the support of 3/5’s of Florida’s legislature to pass. If approved by the legislature, it would require 60% support by voters in November. The bill entitled Save our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes was recommended out of its Senate appropriations committee on a 13-5 – party line vote. Numerous proposed amendments by Democrats were rejected by the process. Its House companion was referred out of the State Affairs committee after numerous attempts by Democrats to amend it failed in that chamber as well.
- It’ll be hot and partly sunny, with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Today’s highs will be in the upper 80’s – a bit warmer than usual for this date. Similar though slightly cooler weather is expected throughout the week. The National Hurricane Center’s map is clear with no Tropical cyclone activity expected for the next 7 days. A plume of Saharan dust extends from the coast of Africa covering the northern and southern Atlantic and extending through the Southern Caribbean Sea and into the Gulf of America.
- The price of gas has fallen below $4 per gallon (for regular unleaded fuel) for the first time in five weeks. The price is currently $3.98 per gallon statewide – 34 cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.19 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.98, it’s $4.04 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.06 per gallon.
