Miami Lawmaker Introduces "Pay-To-Play" Bill For College Athletes

College athletes in Florida may soon cash in when a university uses their name or likeness. Democratic House Minority Leader Kionne McGhee of Miami filed a bill allowing NCAA athletes to be compensated through endorsement deals using their names, images and likenesses. He says the current system is antiquated and must be tweaked. The bill filed after California's governor signed a similar one making it legal for college athletes there to sign agents and sponsorship deals beginning in 2023. The NCAA worries this gives schools an unfair recruiting advantage and erases the distinction between college and professional athletics
