Tampa Hit and Run Victim Dies, Suspect's Charges Upgraded

TAMPA -- A 14-year-old boy struck in a hit and run crash last month has died.

That means a former Department of Children and Families worker accused in the accident faces first degree felony charges of leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

24-year-old Nakeeba Ryan remains in jail. The victim was struck around 7 p.m. January 30th on 15th Street North at 122nd Avenue East. Hillsborough deputies say Ryan got out of her S-U-V but got back in and drove off.

Ryan was fired by DCF after the initial charges were filed.

Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister had this reaction to the victim's death: "We will never know if this young life could have been saved had Nakeeba Ryan remained at the scene and called for help immediately instead of driving away. Fleeing from a crash is not only cruel, but it is also a guaranteed way to face charges, even if you were not at fault. Under no circumstances should a driver leave the scene of an accident."
