Manatee County Moves to Resist Potential Federal COVID Lockdown

BRADENTON -- If there's a potential Biden administration call for a national lockdown to fight the COVID-19 pandemic this winter, it may get some pushback in Manatee County.

Commissioners voted to ask the county attorney to research their options if the federal government orders a business shutdown next year.

That followed comments by commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge, who said several local business owners had expressed concerns about the effect of another shutdown on their workers.

"A lot of people are saying that, Joe Biden hasn't said he will impose a lockdown, but he hasn't taken a strong stand against it, he hasn't said that he will rule it out either," van Ostenbridge said.

Van Ostenbridge said he believes Governor DeSantis will resist any attempted federal lockdown and suggested drafting a letter to support him, but the county attorney recommended against that move at Thursday's meeting.
