New Invasive Lizard Species Discovered In Florida

The iguanas have some company.

Scientists at the University of Florida have identified a new invasive lizard in our state. It's the Peter’s rock agama lizard, a species from Africa that can grow up to a foot long, with an orange or red head, a black or dark gray body, and a tail that often has an orange stripe and black tip.

The lizard feeds on insects, including butterflies, which could cause trouble for South Florida’s endangered butterfly species.

The reproductive season for this lizard is during the spring and summer. Scientists say that from April through August, females lay an average of seven to nine eggs.
