A vigil for the man who was killed during an altercation with a school resource officer and an off-duty West Palm Beach police officer.

Officials say Romen Phelps crashed a van through the gates at Dreyfoos School of the Arts on Friday, May 13th.

His mother, Robbin Jackman, was one of many who gathered across the street to remember the 33-year old.

"Anybody who knew Romen knew he was full of life. So we just want to keep that going. I'm just here to celebrate (the) life of my son and be surrounded by so many people that loved him."

Phelps attended Dreyfoos and friends and family say he had struggles with mental health in recent years.

Organizers of the vigil tell CBS 12 they are pushing mental health awareness.

Moments before his death, Phelps had crashed through the gates at the school and police say he nearly ran over a maintenance worker.

The officer who shot the man is on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
