The Kentucky Derby odds favorite, Forte, was scratched just hours before the race Saturday morning upsetting the betting market.
The decision to scratch the Florida Derby winner came after a veterinarian noticed the 3-year-old colt had a bruised foot.
In addition to five scratches, seven horses died at Churchill Downs in advance of the race and two more were euthanized.
Two of the dead horses were trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. who was indefinitely suspended by the track. An investigation is underway to determine why so many horses are dying and their cause of death.
Forte, which is owned by Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola, is expected to recover and may run against Mage, the Kentucky Derby winner, at the Preakness.
