Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control is updating its euthanasia policy as the shelter on Belvedere Road continues to be overcrowded.

There are 237 dogs, but only 144 kennels, so a letter went out this week to volunteers that warned dogs with certain medical conditions like heartworm and dogs that have been in the shelter for an extended period of time may be humanely euthanized without a rescue request.

The agency says now more than ever is the time for folks with room in their homes for a new friend to visit the shelter in West Palm Beach and adopt or foster a pet.

Adoption fees for dogs are waived through the month of August.
