A Palm Beach County lawmaker has filed a bill that would set standards for storing firearms in a vehicle.

Boynton Beach Democrat State Representative Joe Casello is co-sponsoring HB1087 and a local police chief says it could be useful.

"It's not responsible gun ownership."

Palm Springs' Tom Ceccarelli is talking about how people often go about storing guns in their cars and trucks when they're not around.

"The guns that get stolen are just under the seat or in a pouch...they're just so easily accessible."

The chief says it happens too often.

"I know just over the holidays, just for the Palm Springs PD we had two incidents of guns getting stolen out of cars."

He says at least one of those vehicles was left unlocked.

This bill would mandate storage in a locked glove compartment or the trunk when you're not in the vehicle.

Besides losing your property, Ceccarelli points out the bigger concern...

You just put a gun out on the street. It's out there, you never know what's going to happen. And we get a lot of these and it's way too many that we get so I'm glad at least someone's addressing it."

There is a similar bill in the Senate, filed by Palm Beach County Democrat Lori Berman.
