A contentious battle over equestrian land in Wellington came down to one final vote.

The Village Council has given approval to a controversial plan to take 96 acres out of the equestrian preserve so a developer can build luxury communities.

Developers want to rezone 96 acres of land from the preserve and replace the Equestrian Village to build luxury communities, along with a country club and stores.

A group of property owners in Wellington this week offered to purchase the Equestrian Village for $25 million as a way to stop the development.

The situation has led to efforts to recall the mayor and other members of the council who voted on first reading in November in favor of the land swap proposal.

In exchange for the land swap, the developer promises to rebuild the Equestrian Village in another location with expanded and updated showgrounds.
