Miami-Dade is home to two thousand historic buildings, but are they safe?

SB 1526 advanced today by the Florida Senate rules committee seeks to balance history with safety.

Bill Sponsor Sen. Bryan Avila says structures near the coastline must conform to National flood insurance standards.

The legislation would prohibit Florida municipalities from restricting the demolition of any coastal building that does not meet federal flood standards for new construction.

Buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places before the year 2000 like the South Beach Art Deco District would be exempt.

Daniel Ciraldo with the Miami Design Preservation League says under those parameters the Eden Roc Hotel would be deemed "non-conforming" and unsafe.

The bill defines a non-conforming building as one that does not meet federal flood standards for new construction.
