Stuart city leaders are siding with many residents who do not want a rehab facility moving in.

City Commissioners on Tuesday voted against a proposal from the owner of a closed senior assisted living facility who wanted the city to rezone the property to allow him to reopen the building on Indian Street as an upscale residential drug and alcohol treatment facility.

Among the detractors was Martin County Sheriff William Snyder, who told commissioners that he had concerns regarding what happens when patients fail out of the program. He feared they would be roaming the streets of Stuart.

The commission's final vote came despite the Local Planning Agency supporting the proposal.
