An arrest for petition fraud in South Florida.
Ashford Monroe, a paid petition circulator working to get a recreational marijuana amendment on the ballot, is accused of forging about 1,600 signatures in Palm Beach and Broward counties. Officials say they include the signature of at least one person who is dead.
Palm Beach Elections Supervisor Wendy Sartory Link tells CBS 12 News that her office flagged the alleged fraud, thanks to new laws.
"(It's) part of what we do, but it is extraordinarily time consuming and expensive."
She says fraudulent activity often spikes around controversial or high-profile issues.
The marijuana initiative won't be on the ballot in November since it did not receive enough certified signatures.
