Have you ever wanted to try your hand at Amateur Radio?

"HAM" Radio is another term for it, but while it's a hobby for thousands across the country, this form of communication is also helpful.

Albert Moreschi, President of the Jupiter Tequesta Repeater Group, says during the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005, his group of amateur operators were key in getting important information to the emergency management officials in Palm Beach County when power was lost along with the communications structure.

More than 35,000 participants will be taking part nationwide in the American Radio Relay League's Field Day, with JTRG celebrating its 40th anniversary at the Carlin Park Civic Center this weekend.

Local HAM operators will gather to compete and see who can make the most connections.

Moreschi says it's also a great opportunity to prepare for hurricane season or any other emergency situation during which they may be needed.

The public is invited to show up anytime during the 24-hour event, which runs from 2 p.m. on Saturday to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

You can even practice on an amateur radio while the event is underway.
